Great Faces Great Places

Day 3 on this Great Trek West!
We started off by waking in the room that was heaven compared to our first stop, and we were loving that extra hour we got from the 'fall back'! We got all packed (more efficiently than the day before) and stopped by the gas station next to the hotel to fill up. We went in to get some hot drinks (coffee was bad at the Super8 though the breakfast spread was nice) and the nicest lady was at the counter just starting our day off with a smile.
One thing I wondered out loud on our way out of that 'town' was how far all the people that live around there have to travel for gas. There were no houses around and all dirt roads right off the highways. Must be some different kind of life.

South Dakota: We entered South Dakota in the late morning. I got the left hand picture on the move, and the one on the right from the rest stop right over the border. And yes folks if you didn't know their slogan is "Great Faces Great Places"! It's pretty excellent.

Though we didn't see nearly as many people faces as we did cows! There were cattle munching the fields all along I-90. And also corn fields of course. We passed by but could not bring ourselves to stop and see the Corn Palace in Mitchell. The scenery looked much the same as the last few states, with just a few rolling hills.

Here you can see a few pictures of our crossing of the Missouri River. It was a bit foggy and gloomy out at this time, but it was a bit more exciting than the Mississippi. There were some nice bridges and hills, and yeah that's about it... Again not a landmark that got us super thrilled.

Early afternoon we started getting towards the black hills! You can't tell here as much, but the soil on the side of hills was black. We were getting very excited to get to the Badlands!!

We passed by a deserted looking 'old west town' that I'm sure is a tourist attraction when it's not totally freezing out. I'm still not sure who decides to just make a fake western town, but I'm sure it's nice. As long as there are some cowboys that walk around there too!

Here we got to see the Badlands off in the distance. The sky was beautiful and clear by the afternoon. I just need to note here that we got a little more Great Gatsby reading in. But mostly during that long haul on I-90 that afternoon we played car games. We played 20 questions with categories. It was a great time. Actually. As Jacob said, "My stomach hurts from laughing." It was turning out to be a great day!

Here is the large prairie dog statue just hanging out on the side of the road by the Prairie Homestead historical site that was just this strange small house below. We didn't see any actual prairie dogs though. Sad.

Here are the Badlands again. We will post later. Hopefully tonight about the rest of that great, eventful day!
Leaving love with all of you who are taking the time to read about our adventures! We appreciate the moral support :)

  1. So, did you visit the prairie homestead? I want to go there and hang out with Laura Ingalls if possible.
